Mary Shelley made a brave if ultimately fruitless contribution to support the freedom of Greece – and so, implicitly, the ideals of ancient democracy and of modern constitutional government – through her translation of Prince Ypsilanti’s Cry of War to the Greeks from modern Greek into English in early April 1821.
